Insurance in Costa Rica
There is only one Insurance Company, Instituto Nacional de Seguros ("INS"), owned by the Costa Rican Government. INS provides all types of insurance Auto, Home and Medical. By law, only INS is allowed to sell insurance here. If you get coverage abroad, that is OK.
INS sells insurance over the counter or through Agencies: The price is the same for clients, but agencies provide additional service.
The value of items being insured is determined by the owner, using "Actual Cash Value" (replacement value less depreciation).
Insured values and premiums are in Colones. Currency devaluation makes it advisable to periodically revise values.
All policies have deductibles on claims. The system is complex, but deductibles average 20% per claim on most types of policies.
